I also have the select/start buttons on the front lower touchscreen, much easier to press like that than the buttons themselves. I'm playing Metal Gear Solid on the Vita currently and I'm using the right stick to switch weapons/items, by assigning L2/R2 to left/right, with up/down to cycle them. On the Vita I like that you can assign most (any?) of the buttons to the front touchscreen four corners as well. The PSP does give you the advantage of being able to mod it with custom firmware, which means that if you can get your mitts on PS1 disc games that haven't made an appearance on PSN, you can generate EBOOT files out of them which will run with varying degrees of success on your PSP. It's a bit fiddly, but it works better than the PSP's approach, plus you have the benefit of the Vita's second stick. The Vita uses the rear touchpad to emulate L2/R2/元/R3. The PSP is at a disadvantage in that there is no way to emulate all buttons at once - the analog nub is used to emulate certain other controls (Dual Shock analogue stick, L2+R2).
